How Ganesha Got His Head

Parvati was bathing and created a boy from the dirt of her body and assigned him the task of guarding the bathroom door. As Shiva came home he was surprised to find a boy denying him access to his own bathroom, enraged he strikes the boys head off. Parvati was grieved, so Shiva ordered his servants to find any sleeping being facing the North and bring back its head. The servants brought back a severed elephants head and attached it to the boys body, thus reviving him. Ganesha was born! He was assigned to lead Shiva’s troops.

This is only one of the stories of how Ganesha was born.
