Links and Sources for Information on Philosophy of Mind

Breanne's Links (of DOOM)!

(You don't have me down for this one, Mr. Baker, but this is the one I'm doing. So there.)

I. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philosophy_of_mind   - Good place to start; gives a good general definition, and a lot of specific philosopher names to look up. However, it is also extremely, extremely long and tedious to read down, not to mention difficult to source and generally frowned upon.

II. http://consc.net/mindpapers   - Amazing resource; it provides links to papers done on pretty well any branch of Philosphy of the Mind, as far as I can tell by reputable people. The only problem is that some of the pages would not load for me -- though that, admittedly, could have been the school computers just being themselves. (This should definitely stand for more than one link; there are hundreds of useful ones there ... grumble grumble ...)

II.a) More specifically, I am referring to the Mind-Body Problem:  consc.net/mindpapers/1.3i

- What is the Mind-Body Problem? www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8319503

- The Mind/Body Problem and its Solution. www.ling.rochester.edu/~duniho/MS-Thesis/Contents.html

II.b) More interestingly, go here to see some arguments on zombies, which is by far the coolest thing I've come across in this research, and which is unfortunately completely useless for this project.

III. http://philosophy.uwaterloo.ca/MindDict/    - Reputable resource, being from the University of Waterloo, however it is difficult to find anything too exact, and some of the language is very difficult. When you are lucky to stumble across something, though, the definition is generally well-written and concise, once you get past the language.

IV. http://www.iscid.org/encyclopedia/Mind-Body_Problem   - Another reputable resource, and a little more plain-spoken, though it does open up even more different branches of philosophy that no one should have room in a thousand word essay to mention. (Seriously, how many of these branches are there?!)

V. http://www.galilean-library.org/manuscript.php?postid=43792   - A little long and wordy, but goes a little more in-depth with examples, to help with basic concepts. There is also an interesting little dialogue at the end.

DOS-http://www.rep.routledge.com/article/V038   Not gonna lie pretty dry stuff but half decent it outlines and explains Philosophy of mind.  Written kinda intencely dry but its all good.  It braches off to some less relevent stuff but the first bit is pretty good.

TRES-http://www.philosophyarchive.com/concept.php?philosophy=Mind  Sick website that talks all about everything to do with philosophy and has some decent stuff about philosophy of mind although it is basicaly the same general information as the first two sites gave.

Quatro- http://www.bu.edu/wcp/MainMind.htm  Go to this website then scrool down to find a number of different essays and papers writen about philosophy of mind i only checked out one of these articles but it wasnt bad.

Josh Matthews Philosophy of Mind Links:

1. http://www.galilean-library.org/manuscript.php?postid=43792 - There was a lot of reading , but very simple and easy to grasp. Uses examples from everyday life thus, being easy to understand. Madd credit to Leila for the great link word up !

2. http://consc.net/guide.html - this was an exceptional source, everything is very organized into various branches of philosophy of mind consequently, being able to find what your llooking for in this broad category of philosophy. i recommend it a lottttt!

3. http://host.uniroma3.it/progetti/kant/field/ - this link was pretty good because there are various subsections written not jsuit by one person so you don't get teh bias' that some authors have because you have a broad selection to choose from , kind of dry though, so get some lotion !

4. http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/leibniz-mind/- This link i foubnd very interesting because iot gets away from all of the mind-body problem stuff . It focuses on Matter and Thought , perception and appetition of the mind which is pretty cool to look at. The only thing is that theres a lot of reading but thats pretty cool for all the information gathered. I would definetley reccomend it.

5. http://www.duke.edu/philosophy/mind.html - this link is very useful because it has many many many subheadings for various branches in the Philosophy of mind. If you see somthing that interests you , click on it and you will be enlightened on that subject. enjoy it !

 SYDNEYS LINKS

http://www.galilean-library.org/manuscript.php?postid=43792

this website helped me the most – the language is simple and it covers all of the different problems and topics required for philosophy of mind. It’s easily understood, covers such topics as mind/body problem, monism, identity, etc.

http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/identity-personal/

This website addresses all of the personality conflicts that you will have to learn about. It covers questions such as who am i? Where do I come from? It helps you to get to the truth of what you truly are –a unique individual.

http://www.iep.utm.edu/c/consciou.htm

This website addresses specific philosophers and theories such as dualism and materialism.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Person

Wikipedia was actually of help! It clearly outlines what personhood is and speaks of conception and when exactly we come to “be”.

http://www.rep.routledge.com/article/V038

Although harder to understand, this article aids you in understand the general topic of “philosophy of mind”. Functionalism and Mind and Meaning are large subjects on this webpage.

GOOD SITES FOR PHYLOSOPHY OF MIND BY STEPH DUDAR

 (1) http://atheism.about.com/od/philosophybranches/p/Mind.htm

This website was really useful and it was really easy to understand without really big words that would have you looking through a dictionary for hours on end. It has lots of links to other questions about philosophy some I wouldn’t mind checking out just for my own reading and it has a website search which makes it easier to find content within the website.

 (2) http://www.iscid.org/encyclopedia/Mind-Body_Problem

This is a really helpful website because it is basically an encyclopedia of all the topics off philosophy. It is very easy to search for a topic and even has the alphabet that you can click on and see all the topics under that letter. It goes really in-depth to each topic and also talks a lot about the philosophers who studied those topics. It’s really organized and basic and little to no advertisements to get in the way. I highly recommend this site for research on philosophy.

 (3) http://www.galilean-library.org/manuscript.php?postid=43792

This website is really cute and covers broad topics of philosophy. It has really helpful interviews from philosophers which is useful if you need a direct quote from one of them. It also provides papers about good arguments about philosophy and guidelines how to create a good philosophy paper.

Kellys Links for Philosophy of Mind

1) http://www.thebigview.com/mind/.

This website is actually kinda cool, and not just the set up or graphics. It deals mostly with what is the mind but goes through alot of the philosophers in a time line and outlines conciousness and other aspects of philosophy of the mind. Its mostly based around epistemology so you have to be careful but all in all pretty swell website.

2) http://consc.net/online

This website takes some digging as its papers people have written on conciousness specifically, but you can also search for just philosophy of mind. You can get some really good papers, you might just have to dig like i said to make sure the stuff is good. They all have excellent points though.

3) http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/identity-personal/

This website  is good because its the stanford encyclopedia of philosophy.  didnt use personal identity for my essay but this link had a lot of good points, so i used it in the chart. This website always breaks down things very nicely.
