New question:

is there such thing as a justified killing? Or is it all morally wrong?

-Think about:

death penalty

murder

suicide

euthanasia

...it is fairly morbid, but kinda cool if you think about it!

post some stuff if ya wanna :) !

Throughout recorded history (~6,000 years), there has only been about 30 years of world peace. While a depressing thought when considering the possibility of world peace, that does not mean it is impossible. We're still here, which means we haven't completely @#$^ed up.

I dont think we could ever achieve world peace because no two people are exactly the same. if no two people are the same, then they cant have the same thoughts and opinions on every subject. unless we were all clones and had all the same feelings, opinions and experiences, we cannot achieve this.

this is going to sound bad, but i am not sure if achieving world peace is actually a good thing. ok, here me out, sure disputes CAN cause a lot of death and hate, but a dispute can also be a good thing. A dispute can lead to new agreements and new connections. also, problem solving at a large scale can show individuals that things as large as international problems can be solved. futhermore, creating conflict is in human nature, sure the wolrd right now is really screwed up becasue everyone hates each other and there is no peace, but in the past, disputes have been part of the "circle of life". Think back to prehistoric times, there were multiple types of humans, and only the strongest of them survived the wars, but they deserved to live because they were stronger, and so in a way, dispute can help weed out the weaker from the stronger. But yah, on the other hand, i wish world peace was achievable, because thousands and thousands of people are dying for no reason. but unfortunatley, i do not think that wolrd peace will ever be achieved because humans are much too greedy and selfish.

I agree with sara, mabye there is some deep primal urge to fight. Although perhaps it is also pride that causes us to act out toward others to prove himself by showing his or her strength by defeating another in "combat" be it mental or physical.

If world peace wern't possible, we never would have thought of it.

Perhaps the reason that world peace is attractive in terms of attainablity is it's rarity. People tend to want what they do not have. Therefore, people want worldpeace somewhat blindly. While it wouldbe great to be in a world without war or mindless violence, the consequences of world peace should be considered. Overpopulation, the military business downfall, and complacency would all be an issue. Overpopulation alone would cause many other problems, and suffereing would follow. Perhpas world peace is not as great as it sounds...?

I don't think that world peace can ever be achieved because everyone is different with different beliefs, values, and interests, and a right for one person will be wrong for another. As long as their is always an argument, or a disagreement between different societies, there will always be problems. In today's world I believe that world peace is unachieavable, although there are ways to reduce violence, and fighting, but not enough peace for world peace.

NewQuestion, Justified Killing: Is there really a right or wrong? Again it depends on the type of person you find yourself to be, and the reason behind the action. Say you are totally homeless and alone steal something, To others that would seem wrong. But to you that would seem right.(depending on what is stolen). Right to you because you need it for survival, which is the main objective in life. To survive means everything. Hpwever in a murder, There should be no reason from murdering another human being. Revenge is not justified, i find as a wrong-doing, if justice was nessassary, death is just around the corner for all human beings. Suicide, hahaha, What reasons could there be for suicide. Suicide is cowardice and shameful (in my own opinion, dont kill me. I can understand if ppl get very annoyed with this comment, dont take it personally.) What is the point of killing anyway? Suicide or not?

War is justified killing, is it not?

War is not justified killing....talk to anyone who has survived a war and ask them. It is justified if it balances out the universe. As odd as that seems, justice is for making balance in the universe, and killing could be a part of that.

I think asking a veteran would incur a certain bias.
What if it creates an inbalance? A world of haves and have-nots? I believe this is often the case. Don't you think there is a better way than killing to create justice?
(this could be moved/added to to the "What is Justice?" page, haha.)

couldn't killing be justified and morally wrong at the same time

Zubie said

i agree with Sebastien, killing can be justified, but it could also be morally wrong or unsettling to our conscienous at the same time. Also, on the war topic, war is not justified killing since the defination of war has been "altered" so much to fit the requirements of the American military, now "war" is invading a country and killing thousands of INNOCENT people. How can killing of innocent people ever be justified?

JO37 said

wouldnt that be the same for the enemy?

Zubie said

In the end, innocent people from BOTH sides end up dying, not just one side. I think that people can always find a way to justify killing, but it does not mean that it IS justified. For example, a crazy person who believes that by killing some people he is actually helping many more. He can justify killing, but it is definately not just to the rest of us. So, maybe killing can only be justified on an personal (individual) stand point?
