Saraswati

Saraswati is the godess of knowledge, music and art, all three of which are depicted within this picture.  Saraswati is dressed moderately in white, thus proving her preference to knowledge than to other worldly possessions. In one of her right hands she is holding a palmleaf scroll. Both the scroll as well as her four arms represent knowledge.  The four arms indicate the four aspects of human personality in learning; mind, intellect, alertness and ego. They can also relate to the four vedas (sacred books) and their three different types of literature which are poetry, prose and music. The literature is significant because she is considered to be not only the mother of the vedas but also the goddess of sound and speech. This picture represents music because in every picture of Saraswati she is never without her musical instrument, the veena. In her other hand is a mala, which is a string of beads used in Hindu or Buddist religion to help meditate or count recitations.

Saraswati is important in the hearts of all those who worship and take part in the Hindu religion because it is believed that true divine knowledge is essential in order to achieve moksha.Saraswati is usually shown on or near water because of her history as a river goddess and her name which literally means "the one who flows." She is usually shown either sitting on a swan or a lotus flower. The swan symbolizing the differences between good and evil, while the lotus flower represents absolute truth. A peacock may also be shown in pictures and represents arrogance and pride over beauty and teaches Hindu followers to be ignorant of outside appearances and be more concerned about the eternal truth and what lies beneath. We feel that Sarsawati represents art in everything she does, says or wears. Her music is her art and the rivers, swans, flowers and peacocks that depict her are God's art.
