                                                   Figure 1

                                        Vishnu

Vishnu is placed among three chief gods known as the creator, preserver and destroyer. Vishnu is the preserver; he is known to be a powerful all knowing and all present. The name Vishnu means to spread in all directions, to pervade. Vishnu swells in everything, owns everything and overcomes everything. The two most common representations of Vishnu are, when Vishnu is upon the waves of the ocean on the serpent deity Shesh Nag, or another one he is standing on waves with fours hands out holding his four main attributes. (Figure 1) the lower right hand represents the revolving or creative tendency Vishnu is holding a conch, which is the symbol of the five elements. The conch is a fountain that evolves the five elements i.e. Water, fire, air, earth and sky or space. When the conch is blown the sound is associated with the sound from which creation was developed.  In the upper right hand, it represents the cohesive tendency he is holding the shining like infant sun; this is the symbol of mind. In the upper left hand, this represents the tendency towards dispersion and liberation, He is holding lotus flower, this symbol of casual power and illusion, from which the universe arises.  In the lower left hand, this represents the notion of individual existence; this is a mace and the symbol of primeval knowledge.  The Wheel of Vishnu has six spokes and symbolizes six petal lotuses. It represents the limitless controlling all the six seasons and the fearful weapo0n that cuts of the heads of all demons. The lotus of Vishnu symbolizes purity and represents the unfolding of creation. It is the truth, the element from which emerge the rules of conduct and knowledge. The mace of Vishnu represents the element force, from which all physical and mental powers are derived. The many headed snake is also known as the timeless or ageless snake. Shesh Nag, the serpent god, Vishnu sleeps of the bed of it coils during intervals of creation. Shesh Nag is also represented as one supporting the world on it hood.
