Ha ha, just quickly, since it is the first comment up here, there is a huge list of related things to this in Sara's comments, just because of the nature of the two questions, I would take advantage of that.
I know this is probably more straight-forward than you want but our personalities, how/where we were raised. They say each person is unique, yet the hardest thing you can do is define how you are unique against the rest of the world.
Good question. This confuses me every day. From various studies and random tidbits of information I have observed I believe that a great deal of who we are is genetic. Of course this varies from person to person, but mostly it has someone of an influence. Second I think that the way you were raised and what environment you were raised in plays a large part. Also, the social environment you grow up in outside of your house and family contributes to an extent. These all shape your personality and way of life.
well that depends what you mean i guess... a stereotype could define people in society as other people see them and therefore people will define you based on that... but to define your self... i guess would be a representation of your experiences and thoughts... just really who you are as a person... your beliefs of the truth and good and evil
I have to disagree that genetics makes us who we are, it does however play a small portion of who we are because what we are given genetically we can use these skills to our advantage and therefore it plays a part in who we are. I believe we become more who we are more than anything because a lot of who we are is affected by our lifestyles, and the people that raise us growing up. I believe that a lot of who we are is by our own decision but is influenced by such factors as genetics, lifestyle. I don't think that genetics exactly shapes our personality its more of our logic in the matter that decides who we become and a lot of this is picked up at an early age from the people that look after us growing up.
I think that genetics shapes your physical self like the way you look, but mentally, I believe it is everything you experience in life that makes you who you are.
